Ukrainian Union of Lessors: more than 13% of cars in Ukraine are purchased on lease

According to the Ukrainian Union of Lessors, its members registered 13.1% of all passenger cars and 11.4% of all light commercial vehicles purchased in Ukraine.

In total, 6,449 vehicles were registered by leasing companies that are members of the Association in the first half of 2020. The peak of registrations came in February 2020, when 1,459 vehicles were registered.

In March-April 2020, there was a decline in vehicle registrations by leasing companies compared to the previous month. Thus, in March, the volume of vehicle registrations by members of the Association fell by 32%, and in April – by 52%. The main reason for the decline is the COVID-19 pandemic and the quarantine restrictions imposed in connection with it.

Since May, the market has shown momentum to recover. Thus, in May, members of the Association registered 86% more vehicles than in the previous month, and in June – 50% more. In general, the level of registrations in June reached a level comparable to the volume of restaurants in January and February 2020.

The dynamics of vehicle registration for the first half of 2020 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was assessed by the Association of companies that provided data in both periods. The volume of vehicle registrations in such companies increased by 2.1% in the first half of the year. Thus, it can be argued that despite the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, vehicle leasing has so far maintained its position and even secured a slight increase.

According to the results of the first half of 2020, OTP Leasing (17% of all registrations for the period), ULF Finance (12%), and Avis (7%) became the top three in terms of new vehicle registrations. In the segment of used vehicles, the top three companies included Autocredit Plus (13% of all registrations for the period), AK Plus (10%) and Aventus Leasing (2%).

83% of all vehicles registered by members of the Association in the first half of 2020 are cars. This segment has traditionally remained the most popular for leasing services. The most popular cars registered for leasing during this period were Renault cars. The share of this brand was 20% of all registrations in the passenger car segment. The top five most popular brands are also: Peugeot (8.5%), Toyota (8.3%), Skoda (5.9%), Ford (5.7%).

Outside the passenger car segment, about 8% of vehicle registrations were for trucks and another 5% for light commercial vehicles. The remaining segments had a share of less than 5%.

Lessor companies – members of the UUL generate 80% of the leasing market. Therefore, the actual level of leasing penetration in these vehicle segments is slightly higher, but in the unorganized market, it is not taken into account.
